Case Study: Southwark Council
The government's Priority School Building Programme addresses schools most in need of repair. The £4.4 billion scheme has allowed schools to be extended or refurbished after initially being identified as in the worst condition.
Having been allocated this government funding, Morgan Sindall and Galliford Try were appointed for the refurbishment of twelve schools operating under Southwark Council. After prospecting with both clients, Dawsongroup were able to supply catering units to the three sites requiring such facilities; Albion School and Robert Browning School operating under Morgan Sindall and Keyworth Primary under Galliford Try.
Sales Manager, Tom Dawson, initially met with the schools' contract caterers, Harrison Catering Services, to discuss exact internal fit-outs of the facilities and equipment requirements to ensure cooking operations remain as smooth as possible. Along with Installations Manager, Dave Hill, they then both conducted site surveys at each school to assess different aspects of the siting location and produced detailed installation action plans for the clients. This incorporated the removal of street furniture where required to enable access into site as well as the use of specialist lifting equipment to manoeuvre our unit over a house and into position.
Feeding 400-500 children per day, each school required a similar catering set-up, which included a 25ft production kitchen fitted with 20-grid Rational combination ovens, six-burner range with oven, lift-hood dishwasher and bratt pan alongside external storage facilities; all as specified by the end user.
Installations at each site were scheduled during the school holidays, to work with the clients' programme of works and eliminate potential disruption to students and staff during this phase. The installation at each Morgan Sindall site took between 2 and 3 days to complete, where kitchen units were delivered, catering equipment fitted and storage facilities constructed alongside the kitchen. Connected by a linking structure, these units provided staff with areas to store meal ingredients and other ancillaries. Ramps were also installed for easy transportation of hot trolleys to and from the main building.
After the initial kitchen delivery was successfully completed for Galliford Try, also taking around 3 days to complete, the installations team returned to site at Keyworth Primary School following the client's request for an additional storage facility. Working to their requirements, the team constructed a wrap-a-round dry storage solution leading from the catering unit to an external door at the side of the kitchen and into the car park.
Throughout the 18-month hires, Dawsongroup kitchens provided the three sites with the upmost support across service and maintenance of the catering units and its ancillaries, working directly with each school to completely minimise disruption to normal working practices. This was also ensured during the de-installation and removal of the facilities, where Dawsongroup worked during half term and after regular school hours.
