Case Study: Clapton Girls Technology College
When Hackney Borough Council and Babcock Education were putting together plans to rebuild Clapton Girls' Technology College, Dawsongroup were asked to advise a suitable solution to enable catering to continue onsite for the 900 pupils and staff. Clapton Girls Technology College is an institution where the young ladies of Hackney have been getting their qualifications for the last century. A winner of a number of achievement awards, the school is now at the centre of a £30 million investment program to rebuild its existing facilities.
As one of the UK's largest construction companies, Mansell Plc were responsible for the complete rebuilding programme. By working with Dawsongroup kitchens from concept to installation, we were able to provide the most suitable catering facility. From the initial consultation we worked closely with Mansell and the college to ensure that the solutions we proposed were appropriate and exceeded all standards required by Hackney Council.
The equipment provided included a Commander Production Kitchen with a 20 grid combination oven, boiling pan, fryer and several six-burner ranges along with ample preparation space. The Companion pot wash unit had a hood lift dishwasher, double sink, hand washbasin and racking for pan storage. It was important to also enable them to store the ambient, chilled and frozen goods in separate storage areas, but with easy and quick access. Within the catering facility, a walk-in cold room and upright freezers were installed next to the main preparation areas. In addition to the catering sections of the complex, the staff also required a changing area with secure lockers and an office for their kitchen manager.
As part of our installation works, each of the units were connected together via a weather resistant linking unit that also doubled as a communal area. Within this area, an independent fire alarm control panel was located and various notice boards for staff to use. Access to the facility was by a 1:16 ramp for the main goods in, while the link unit was connected directly to the school dining hall.
On completion of the installation and as part of the hand-over package, the catering staff had a period of equipment training which included a demonstration by a professional chef. As part of its ongoing service package, Dawsongroup includes regular maintenance and a 24-hour emergency phone line.
